HD3D Labs : Distributed computing

Whether it is for rendering, compositing or any of the multiple data processing techniques that are necessary during a film production, the film industry is greedy in storage and computing resources, as well as bandwidth. Moreover, the generalization of new formats (2K, 4K, stereo) still increases the needs in hardware.

Today, studios already heavily invest hardware resources to simply make production possible. But the (although fast) increase in hardware capabilities is not enough compared to the even faster increase in needs, which amount to tera octets and thousands of cores.

We tackle this problem with a dual approach:
- optimization of the existing resources with an optimized render job dispatcher that allows fine grain control and monitoring of the jobs
- technical and economic analysis of the potential usages of the cloud. Actually, the flexibility that cloud computing maks possible is a critical point for the future, but has to be balanced with business constraints (control, plug-ins, licenses, data access, performance overhead of virtualization, …etc).
